The Master’s in Development Practice (MDP) at the Faculty of Economics and Management (FASEG) at the Université Cheikh Anta Diop (UCAD) is a two-year program, conducted in French and English, with special emphasis on West Africa. Each incoming class is limited to 30 students, including up to ten professionals with significant prior experience as development practitioners.

English-language training is provided to prepare students for courses offered by the Global MDP Secretariat. Under UCAD’s tutelage, many of its students achieve high TOEFL and GRE scores and are admitted to graduate programs in the United States. UCAD is collaborating with the Global MDP Secretariat, the Columbia Earth Institute’s Millennium Village Project (MVP) in Potou, Senegal, and the Millennium Cities Initiative (MCI) in Louga, Senegal, to refine plans for an effective field-training program that will consist of two summer sessions.

UCAD, in Dakar, Senegal, was founded as a school of medicine in 1918 and in 1957 was established as a university. It is the oldest university in francophone Africa. It has an enrollment of 60,000 students and supports faculty in law and politics, the natural sciences and technology, medicine and pharmacy, the humanities, education, and economics and management. Training in such diverse fields as journalism, engineering, public health, and the environment is offered in various schools under the UCAD umbrella. UCAD also houses several important institutes, including IFAN (Institut Fondamental d’Afrique Noire), the African Institute of Basic Research.
