Students and Alumni Advisory Council

The Student and Alumni Advisory Council was created in January of 2014 through a meeting of the MDP Secretariat and the global MDP academic institutions. The three purposes of SAAC are to:

Represent student and alumni opinions and interests within the Global MDP Association
Provide professional platform(s) for job opportunities, networking, and the promotion of the MDP brand to employers
Create platforms for MDP students and alumni for discussion, global projects, and ideas sharing

Every MDP student should have the opportunity to voice their concerns, suggestions and needs through SAAC, and SAAC activities and information should flow back down to students. To enable this, SAAC is comprised of three levels – school, regional, and global.

School: Each MDP Institution should have 2-3 representatives.
Regional: The 2-3 representatives from each school sit on their respective Regional SAAC (East Asia, South Asia, Africa, North America, Latin America, and Europe).
Global: One to two representatives from each Regional SAAC will be elected to sit on the Global SAAC.

Informality usually connotes small and unorganized producers operating on the fringes of the formal economy. In West African countries, however, the normal situation is to some extent reversed: a dynamic informal sector dominates the stagnant formal economy. Moreover, in these countries, small operators coexist with very large and politically well-connected informal enterprises and well-organized networks. Notwithstanding its importance, there have been relatively few systematic studies of this dual feature of the informal sector in West Africa, and consequently too little is known about it. One of our hypotheses is that determinants and appropriate policy responses are likely to differ between “large” and “small” informal operations.

Vikram Patel - Why Mental Health Matters to Global Health (ASI 2012)		Vikram Patel, McGill Transcultural Psychiatry	Health Sciences, Human Rights, Lecture, Library, Mental Health, Video	Global health is the new avatar for what we once called “international health” and, going back further in time, “tropical medicine”. Global health stands out from its predecessors in three key respects: first, its priorities are determined by the science of the burden of disease; second, its driving philosophy is equity, i.e. justice and fairness in the distribution of health in society; and third, its scope is global, i.e. it concerns actions which can benefit the health of people globally. This presentation will present evidence to make the case that mental health is not only relevant to global health in all these respects, but in fact lies at its very heart. The presentation will then address some key road-blocks to global efforts to improve access to care for people with mental disorders, in particular the grave shortage and iniquitous distribution of mental health specialist resources.
